Job Description

CHIEF ENGINEER (General Cargo)

Key Responsibilities:

Engine Room Operations:
Overseeing the operation of all machinery, including the main engines, auxiliary machinery, and electrical systems.
Maintenance and Repair:
Planning and executing preventative maintenance, repairs, and upgrades to ensure the reliable operation of all equipment.
Crew Management & Training:
Supervising and training the engineering crew, ensuring they are competent and proficient in their duties.
Safety and Compliance:
Implementing and maintaining safety procedures and regulations, ensuring compliance with relevant laws and standards.
Energy Management:
Monitoring energy consumption and efficiency, implementing measures to optimize fuel consumption and reduce environmental impact.
Technical Documentation:
Maintaining accurate logs and records of all maintenance, repairs, and operational activities.
Emergency Preparedness & Response:
Developing and implementing emergency procedures, coordinating with the ship's captain and other departments in case of an emergency.
Budgeting and Inventory Management:
Managing the engineering department's budget, ensuring adequate supplies and spare parts are available.
Liaison with Shore-Based Personnel:
Coordinating with shore-based engineering personnel for repairs, maintenance, and upgrades.
Compliance with Regulatory Bodies:
Ensuring the ship's compliance with all applicable regulations and standards, including classification societies and flag state requirements.

Qualifications/Requirements

Additional Responsibilities:
Reporting:
Reporting to the ship's captain on the status of the engineering department and any issues that may arise.
Problem Solving:
Identifying and resolving technical problems, ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the vessel.
Training and Development:
Providing training and development opportunities for the engineering crew, ensuring they are equipped to handle their duties effectively.
Delegation and Supervision:
Delegating tasks to the engineering crew and supervising their work to ensure it is completed to the required standards.
Planning and Scheduling:
Planning and scheduling maintenance activities, ensuring that the vessel remains operational while minimizing downtime.
