Animal keepers have a wide range of responsibilities, which can include:
Feeding and watering animals, including insects or reptiles
Cleaning animal cages, pens, or aquariums to maintain hygiene standards
Observing animal behavior to monitor their health and well-being
Providing veterinary care for sick or injured animals, including administering medications and performing surgery when necessary
Administering controlled burns to maintain healthy ecosystems in forests and grasslands
Training animals to perform tricks or other behaviors for entertainment purposes
Preparing food for animals including fish, birds, mammals, or reptiles
Providing social interaction with humans through petting zoos or other exhibits
Maintaining records of animal diets, breeding schedules, health issues, and other animal care information

Qualifications/Requirements

1. Animal care: Animal care is the ability to provide proper care for animals. This can include knowing the proper diet, the amount of exercise an animal needs and the type of environment an animal needs to live in. Animal care can help you develop the skills you need to work with animals in a zoo or aquarium.

2. Communication: Animal keepers must be able to communicate with their team and the public. They often need to explain animal behavior and answer questions about the animals they care for. They also need to be able to give instructions to their team and explain how to care for the animals.
Customer service: Animal keepers interact with a variety of people, including patrons, volunteers and other staff members. Customer service skills can help you communicate with others and provide them with the information they need. You can also use customer service skills to train and educate visitors about the animals in your care.

3. Empathy: Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. Animal keepers can use empathy to help animals feel comfortable in their new surroundings. For example, if an animal is nervous about a new animal keeper, an empathetic animal keeper might be able to calm the animal by approaching it slowly and speaking softly.

4. Organization: Animal keepers need to be organized to ensure they have everything they need to care for the animals in their care. This includes having the right supplies and knowing where to find them. It also means keeping records of the animals’ health and behavior. Being organized can help you save time and make sure you’re providing the best care for the animals.
