San Lorenzo Ruiz General Hospital (SLRGH) located at 25 O. Reyes St, Santulan, Malabon City was established on March 08, 1990 by virtue of Republic Act No. 6864 sought by the efforts of then Malabon Representative Teresa Aquino-Oreta and Secretary of Health Carmencita N. Reodica. The Act created the Saint Lorenzo Ruiz Municipal Hospital.
It started operating as an OPD clinic on September 07, 1998 and as a hospital under the name of San Lorenzo Ruiz Women’s Hospital on December of the same year. It was operated by ninety-nine (99) volunteer staff, inclusive of doctors, nurses, paramedics and support staff under the direct administrative supervision of Dr. Ma. Alicia M. Lim, who was then the Medical Center Chief of Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center (JRRMMC). It was in October 1999 when it became a retained hospital under the Department of Health – National Capital Region. In March 2004, Dr. Maria Isabelita M. Estrella was appointed as the Chief of Hospital I. To date, Marilou T. Nery, MD, DPPS, MPH is the Medical Center Chief I of SLRGH.
SLRWH was a 10-Bed Level 1 hospital under the Department of Health, retained by the National Capital Regional Office. The hospital has been in operation for almost two decades on a two-storey building with a total floor area of 1,764 square meters. It was granted a Plantilla Positions for a 25-Bed hospital since it had increased its implementing bed capacity into 30-Bed in 2015; 35-Bed in 2016; 40-Bed in 2017 and eventually 45-Bed in 2018. Despite the very limited clinical space, capability and manpower, the hospital has catered to patients from Malabon, Navotas, Valenzuela, Caloocan, and even of Obando, Bulacan.
In the 17th Congress, House Bill No. 5791 was introduced to upgrade SLRWH to Level 2 general hospital capability with corresponding increase in bed capacity. In 2018, appropriations were granted for the acquisition of land sufficient to establish a five-storey hospital building through the Health Facilities Enhancement Program. The hospital shall physically transfer to its new location along Panghulo Road in Malabon City.
On April 12, 2019, the President approved R.A. No. 11289, “An Act Converting the San Lorenzo Ruiz Women’s Hospital in Malabon City, Metro Manila into a General Hospital to be known as the San Lorenzo Ruiz General Hospital, Increasing its Bed Capacity from Ten (10) to Two Hundred (200) Beds and Appropriating Funds Therefor.”
On August 16, 2019 the Implementing Rules and Regulations of Republic Act No. 11289 or DOH Administrative Order 2019-0030 was signed by the Secretary of Health, Mr. Francisco T. Duque III, MD, MSc which took effect fifteen (15) days after its publication in a newspaper of general circulation on December 2, 2019. Thus in 2020, SLRWH was formally known as San Lorenzo Ruiz General Hospital.
In its promise of Universal Health Care for all Filipinos, the hospital had gone through different accreditations to comply with national standards of health. Currently, SLRGH is accredited by PhilHealth as Center for Quality, has the distinction of Red Orchid Hall of Famer Awardee, a Certified ISO 9001:2015 government hospital and a Silver Trailblazer Awardee during the Institute for Solidarity in Asia’s (ISA) Public Governance System Public Revalida for Initiation Stage last Nov. 28, 2019.
While preparing for the physical transfer of the hospital into its new location along Panghulo Road, Malabon City, departmentalization and upgrade of service capabilities in the specialties of Medicine, Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Surgery and Anesthesiology commenced in 2020 together with some of their sub-specialties and ancillary services. This was made possible through the request for reclassification and creation of additional plantilla positions in three tranches.
On the years 2020-2022, during the COVID-19 pandemic, SLRGH has catered to COVID-19 patients (suspect, probable, confirmed).
