The local Government Unit of Hagonoy is a political subdivision of the Republic of the Philippines, at the municipal level. It is situated at R. Sacedon St. Poblacion Hagonoy, Davao del Sur. This municipality is composed of twenty-one (21) barangays in the province  of Davao del Sur, Philippines. The Local Chief Executive exercises general supervision and control over all programs, projects, services, and activities of the municipal government, enforces all laws and ordinances relative to the governance of the municipality, and exercises the corporate powers provided for under Section 22 of the Local Government Code of the Philippines.

Moreover, with regards to the brief historical background of the munucipality, before it was created, Hagonoy was a sitio of barrio Digos, municiupality of Sta. Cruz. Then, when the Municipality of Padada was created July 1, 1949, Hagonoy was annexed as one of its barrios. On May 28, 1953, by virtue of Executive Order No. 596 issued by President Elpidio V. Quirino, Hagonoy was separated from Padada and became a regular municipality. The first set of appointed officials assumed office on July 5, 1953.

Furthermore, the municipality of Hagonoy envisions becoming a dynamic agri-industrialised municipality with sustainable resources, a socially and ecologically responsive citizenry, and a developed, wholesome, peaceful, and orderly environment.  Besides, as for the mission, it is the commitment of the municipal government to develop itself into a responsive, responsible, and dynamic catalyst of change by promoting opportunities for socio-economic development and mechanism for people's political advancement, promoting the development of its resources through judicious and sustainable utilization, as well as protecting them from abuse and illegal exploitation in order to create a wholesome, ecologically balanced, peaceful, and orderly environment.
