Ma’am Helen or Lui Hui Hai was born at the heart of China on September 22, 1928. Both of her parents are native Chinese. She is the eldest among five (5) siblings.

Year 1937, at the age of nine (9), Helen together with mother, brother and sister were left behind at China during the outskirts of war. They were not able to move out of China since they were left duringthe last ship out. War and flames of battle raged everywhere. Life was difficult. There are scarcity of food, shelter, and medicine. Education is limited. There are fear, loss, despair, hope and strength among everybody.

Year 1941, her father returned to China and brought them to Manila, Philippines where they started a textile business.

Helen studied at Chiang Kai- Shek School, where she finished second year high school but no longer pursued to college due to financial constraints. She studied dressmaking and finished with honors.

Year 1946, Helen grew up as a lovely lady. Having her chinita eyes and porcelain skin, she captured the hearts of many men. She’s very conscious of her health. She makes it a point that she’s well groomed all the time. Finally, being blessed by her parents, Helen got married at the age of 21 to Cohun who is also an immigrant from China. Helen had a happy marriage and they got six (6) children. Due to difficulty of life, she put up a dress shop named Miami Fashion on Azcarraga Street, Manila which lasted for eleven (11) years. The income is not enough so her distant relatives in Davao encouraged her to transfer to Davao.

Year 1963, Helen and her children transferred in Davao and rented an apartment in Lapu-Lapu Street. Helen rented a small space in her grandfather’s store in Uyanguren so she could start up her small business. The store was named as Helens Giftshop. They sold figurines, clocks, jewelries, other gift items. Helen is very good in business and customer service so her customers loved her. Unfortunately, after few years, Helen was forced to relocate her small gift shop to San Pedro area which eventually captured a bigger market. The business boomed and flourished. She focused in selling jewelries and dental supplies. After few years, they opened a pawnshop and so it was called Davao Helens Pawnshop Corporation.

“Helens” specializes in selling top quality jewelries and side by side to it is a pawnshop which offers quality appraisal among pawners. Our goal is to exceed the expectations of every client by offering outstanding customer service and establishing long term relationship with them.
