I. RATIONALE AND BACKGROUND
The Camiguin Emergency Hospital was established on March 12, 1959 as a 25-bed capacity
hospital. On June 21, 1969, by virtue of Republic Act (R.A.) No. 5720, the hospital was classified as
National District Hospital and renamed as Camiguin Island Hospital. In 1994, by virtue of the Local
Government Code, the administrative and technical supervision of Camiguin Island Hospital was
placed under the control of the Local Government Unit of the Province of Camiguin.
Presently, the facility is licensed to operate as Level 1 General Hospital with a 100-bed
capacity. It provides out-patient and in-patient services, capable of performing general surgery,
orthopedics, obstetrics and gynecology procedures, and has five medical departments each headed by
a competent and ably trained Medical Specialist. Its diagnostic capabilities include CT scan, 4D
ultrasound, upper GI and colonoscopy, and an automated laboratory. The hospital serves as end referral for the district hospitals and rural health units of Camiguin Province.
On February 10, 1998, R.A. No. 8482, “An Act Upgrading the Camiguin Island Hospital to
Tertiary Level II to be known as the Camiguin General Hospital, and Appropriating Funds Therefor”
was approved, wherein direct administrative and technical supervision was transferred to the
Department of Health. Section 2 of the law directs the DOH to promulgate the implementing rules
and regulations of the Act.
II. Mission
To upgrade to level II for continuous improvement and better healthcare outcomes services coherent with the DOH standards and UHC by its competent, well-trained, flexible, committed personnel working in a harmonious cohesive team.
