BAGUIO ICE PLANT & COLD STORAGE INC.
The company traces its humble beginnings to the year 1949 when the family's patriarch Judge Alfonso O. Tabora and his hardworking wife Gerarda L. Gonzales established the first privately owned ice plant in the City of Baguio. This venture was an expansion of an already existing family business established before the war by the enterprising couple in Damortis, Sto. Tomas, La Union. Starting with meager savings and borrowed money, the pioneers built a small one (1) story plant with a 3 ton capacity producing thirty (30) 100 pound ice blocks. The daily production was sold to local fish market and a few restaurants. During the summer months, ice was also sold to enterprising individuals who used grated ice for halo-halo and to some ice cream vendors.
Three (3) operators manned the plant, while family members helped in delivery, sales and collection. Market sales were done through ice dealers who retailed the products to fish vendors and other users.
Through the years, the business grew as the Baguio City's population increased and as tourists frequented this highland resort. By 1955, additional production capacity came into stream as another four (4) tons became operational. Since the elder Tabora's spent most of the time in the lowlands where the main business was located, they entrusted the day-to-day Baguio operations to their son Antonio (Tony) and his wife Rosemary (Rose) Tabora.
In 1967, as arranged within the family, the younger couple assumed ownership of the business and embarked on an expansion program to meet the growing demand and clientele. To gain full control of its sales operations, the company took over the two (2) public market outlets and employed its own personnel. On the other hand, one (1) delivery unit supported the field salesman. These twin moves were providential as it improved the profitability of the company.
Sometime in 1968, a floundering competitor company offered its four (4) ton machineries and equipment which the couple readily acquired with the help of an IGLF Loan from the Philippines National Bank- Baguio Branch. Not long after this, the four (4) ton ice plant of Camp John Hay Air Base was put on the auction block and again the fledgling couple successfully bided for the well-maintained machineries which were installed to include new cold storage facilities. To house these acquired ice plant machineries, the couple again borrowed another loan of PHP 500,000.00 from Metro bank-Baguio to construct a two-story building which included a second floor accommodating a four (4) unit residential apartments which augmented the income of the business.
In 1974, as more restaurant and hotel clients clamored for conveniently packed ice, the company introduced the Cube Ice which contributed substantially to the increase in sales for the company.
In 1981, to ensure its capability to meet the growing business, the company by now renamed Baguio Ice Plant and Cold Storage, again loaned from Republic Planters Bank-Manila another IGLF Loan of P2 million to purchase an adjacent property where a new ton 140 blocks (300 pound) ice production facility and two (2) cold storage facilities were commissioned. The latter having contributed additional source of revenues. A highly reliable Vilter 450 compressor powered both ice production and cold storage facilities.
After the untimely demise of Atty. Antonio "Tony" Tabora in 1982, the business was incorporated and now renamed BAGUIO ICE PLANT & COLD STORAGE, INC.
To modernize and economize its operations, the company continually acquired in 1994 "state of the art" equipment and machineries which included the efficient and hygienically producing Vogt Tube Ice Machineries, Ice-O-Matic Dice Ice Machines and water filtration and purification equipment. The acquisitions have proven to have substantially increased company sales as the preference of institutional clients have shifted to these products.
To support the business, additional and bigger delivery trucks were purchased to ply a wider sales area. By then, the workforce was complemented to include production and sales assistants and accounting personnel.
